Google Updates Chrome OS to v61, Adds a New App Launcher and More

We’re off the heels of Google’s bit 2017 hardware launch event where the company just launched a new Chrome OS device. The Pixelbook is a new 2-in-1 laptop for Google’s Chrome OS platform so the company is working to polish the software experience as much as possible before it gets in the hands of new customers. A number of Chrome OS devices are now getting the new update (although there are some exceptions in this case) that brings a few new features and a number of optimizations.

For those who are on the stable branch of Chrome OS, you should be able to update to version 61.0.3163.113, which is platform version 9765.76.0 if your device is supported. I say if your device is supported because in Google’s announcement post they are listing a number of exceptions when it comes to this new update. If you own one of the following devices then Google claims that you will not receive this new Chrome OS update…

Acer Chromebase 24, Acer Chromebook 11, Acer Chromebook 14, Acer Chromebook 15, Acer Chromebook R13, AOpen Chromebox Mini, ASUS Chromebook C202SA, ASUS Chromebook Flip, Chromebook 11, Chromebook 14 for work, Chromebook Pixel, Dell Chromebook 13, Dell Chromebook 13, HP Chromebook 11 G5, HP Chromebook x360, Lenovo Flex 11, Lenovo N23 Chromebook, Lenovo Thinkpad 11e, Samsung Chromebook Plus, Samsung Chromebook Pro, and Toshiba Chromebook 2 …

However, when we look in the comments of this article one user claims to be using the Toshiba Chromebook 2 and to have successfully installed this new update. Along with some bug fixes and security patches, Google says this new update for Chrome OS devices comes with the following changes:

  • New default profile avatar and picker
  • Improved window management support in tablet mode
  • New App launcher
  • Improved power management setting
  • Improved Get Help App
  • New Sign in and Lock Screen design

It’s not unexpected that the company is working to improve tablet mode as quickly as possible before they begin shipping out the first Pixelbook pre-orders.
