Bootloader unlocking voids your Xiaomi or Redmi phone’s warranty, POCO is still excluded

Xiaomi and its sub-brand Redmi have always been preferred for the excellent value their phones offer for the price. But that is not the only reason why the XDA community is fond of the brand. The other reason power users and developers have been inclined towards Xiaomi is that the company allows users to unlock their phone’s bootloaders, which is often the first step to installing a custom ROM or mods. This policy has attracted way too many Xiaomi users to partake in modifying or replacing the pre-loaded software on their devices. However, a recent tweet from Redmi India reveals that this policy may have changed recently and the bootloader unlocking may now void your Xiaomi or Redmi phone’s warranty – at least in India.

For a long time, Xiaomi has had a designated way of unlocking the bootloader and it works differently from the likes of OnePlus or Motorola on which you can just unlock the bootloader using fastboot. Instead, Xiaomi and Redmi users must log in with their Mi accounts into a Windows application called “Mi Unlock Tool” to apply for unlocking their bootloaders. This is followed by a waiting period varying from three days to seven days – which may be better than the two-month waiting period in the past but is still much longer than the few seconds other OEMs require – depending on the device and the region.

On Xiaomi’s part, this method ensures that the company retains a database of all of those users who have successfully unlock their phone’s bootloader. This is in spite of the fact that Xiaomi would allow the warranty to be claimed on phones with unlocked bootloaders unless there was physical damage that could be linked back to the unlocked bootloader, rooting, or a modified kernel.
