Kernel source is about the only thing that an OEM is mandated to provide when they ship a device or software update to said device. While some do it better than others (Sony provides their entire kernel in a well-managed GitHub repository), some don’t do it very well (HTC, Motorola, Xiaomi to name a few), and some don’t do it at all (most Chinese-OEMs). The GPLv2 requires that anyone (companies or individuals) shipping hardware/software which contains software code covered by the GPLv2 (Section 2) make available said software (Section 3) either with the release (Section 3.a), or available for at least 3 years on a medium commonly used for software interchange like, say, GitHub (Section 3.b).
XDA Recognized Developer santod040 has put out a request, pursuant to Section 3.b, for HTC to release the kernel source code for the HTC One M7 build number M7_UL_L51_STOCK_UI_MR_Google_WWE_6.04.1700.16_LMY47O.H16. Let’s hope that HTC chooses to honor their obligation.
