Huawei Announces the Honor 9 Lite with an 18:9 Screen and Quad Cameras

Huawei has been making a lot of headlines lately with their support for Android’s Project Treble along with the confirmation that they will be entering the U.S. market in a big way very soon. The company launched the flagship Honor 9 back in June this year and now they have unveiled the mid-range Honor 9 Lite to the world. The new mid-range Honor 9 Lite will have an 18:9 5.65-inch IPS LCD panel with a Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.

Honor 9 Lite Specifications and Features

When a company launches a low-end or mid-range smartphone in the same series as one of their flagship devices, we generally see a lot of similarities between the two. This doesn’t seem to be the case with the Honor 9 Lite and that may be a good thing because of how the smartphone market has evolved. Using the same 16:9 aspect ratio that they had in the Honor 9 may have turned away a lot of people since the 18:9 seems to be the latest smartphone trend this year.

The Honor 9 Lite comes with an 18:9 5.65-inch IPS LCD panel with a Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The dimensions of the device come in at 151 x 71.9 x 7.6mm, weighing in at 149 grams.

Inside, the Honor 9 uses the Kirin 659 SoC (which has a 2.36 GHz octa-core CPU) and will be available in both 3GB RAM ( and 32GB of internal storage) as well as 4GB RAM (and 64GB of internal storage) variants. Both versions are equipped with a microSD card slot for expandable storage and are both powered by a 3,000mAh capacity battery with what Huawei is calling an intelligent power saving feature.

A unique feature of the Honor 9 Lite that we don’t typically see in other devices is the quad camera setup. The back of the device houses a 13-megapixel sensor paired with a 2-megapixel sensor and this same combination is what we see on the front as well.

Huawei is focusing on these cameras to market the device and says the dual lenses are equipped with features like PDAF, HDR, digital zoom, bokeh effect photography, Smile Capture, Voice Camera, Watermark, Burst Shot and Slow-Motion video shooting. The Honor 9 Lite comes with Android 8.0 Oreo installed out of the box with EMUI 8.0 built on top of it. Port wise, we’re seeing a 3.5mm headphone port for audio and a USB Type-C port for charging.

Depending on the variant you choose to go with, prices range from 1,199 Yuan (~$182) to 1,799 Yuan (~$273). The device goes on sale in China from December 26th, with other countries like India, Russia and UK also on the roadmap for the near future.
